NEEDLEPOINT

Flight of butterflies — A Needlepoint
By Sharon Lee

We are like butterflies who flutter for a day
and think it is forever.
- Dr. Carl Sagan

Butterflies are a beautifully decorative subject to stitch simply because of the variety of colours and aesthetically pleasing shapes. They have been found in art and textiles from around the world, throughout history.
Butterflies are the quintessential symbol of rebirth, transformation, happiness and joy common to every culture . . .

Begin by cutting a 25 cm square (10 inch) piece of 18 mesh needlepoint canvas, either interlock or super mono. Stitch in hand or secure with tacks or staples to a square frame purchased from your local art or needlework shop. Stitching on a frame in basketweave stitch is preferrable as will retain its original shape and result in a more evenly textured surface.

Stitch the complete design in continental or basketweave stitch using a # 24 tapestry needle. Follow the chart by beginning with the butterflies and then by completing the background.

The finished piece will be 12.5 cm (5 inches) round. Stitch on a larger mesh size for a larger design. For example, stitch on 10 mesh canvas for a 23 cm (9 inch) finished piece.

Frame your finished canvas, make a small sachet stuffed with your favorite dried herbs and flowers trimmed with decorative cord and backed with silk or inset your finished canvas into a larger pillow.

Here are the colours you will need -- in your choice of either DMC cotton floss or Needlepoint Inc. silk.
