Originating in the pagan world. the spiral motif arose as the result of early man's observations of nature. It became a potent symbol: creation and growth, death and rebirth symbolized in the ever-changing directional flow of the spiral. The circle represents wholeness, the round contours of the Earth, or of female energy.
